Give Women the Right to Own their Own Home
Give Women the Right to Own Their Own Home
Women do 66 percent of the world's work, but own less than 15 percent of the world's property. In many places, women cannot own or inherit property. This makes women more vulnerable to poverty, violence and HIV/AIDS. If we are going to make progress ending global poverty, we have to start with women.
The bipartisan Global Resources and Opportunity for Women to Thrive Act, if passed, would be a giant step forward.

Dear (recipient name),
As a constituent concerned about women's access to property rights, I am writing to strongly urge you to support the Global Resources and Opportunity for Women to Thrive Act (GROWTH Act), H.R. 2965 and S. 2069. Did you know that women do 66 percent of the world's work, but own less than 15 percent of the world's property? In many places, women cannot own or inherit property. This makes them more vulnerable to poverty, gender-based violence, trafficking and HIV/AIDS. Decades of research have shown that when women get more resources, they put their money in making sure their children have better housing, nutrition, education and health care. This creates a multiplier effect that strengthens families and communities over time. If we are going to make progress ending global poverty, we have to start with women. The GROWTH Act is an important step in the right direction. When this critical legislation comes up for a vote, I urge you to vote YES. The GROWTH Act creates an ‘incentive fund' within USAID to actively encourage economic opportunity projects in poor developing countries that incorporate women's needs. It provides women with a range of tools to lift themselves out of poverty. 1. It will help women to start and grow businesses. 2. It will enhance women's land and property rights. 3. It will help women get better jobs and make women's jobs better. 4. It will help ensure that the benefits of trade reach poor women. To ensure these projects are sustainable, the GROWTH Act encourages USAID contractors to partner with and build the capacity of local women's groups in carrying out these projects. This makes our assistance dollars more effective for the long term. When this critical legislation comes up for a vote, I urge you to vote YES.
