Less funding means fewer homes - help restore Section 4 funds!

Recently, the Bush Administration eliminated Section 4 from its 2009 budget request to Congress. The HUD Section 4 Capacity Building and Affordable Housing program gives communities the tools to thrive, and individuals and families the opportunities to succeed.

Habitat has already built more than 9,000 homes with the support of Section 4 grants. Without this funding, however, future Habitat homes could be in jeopardy. Urge your members of Congress to restore funding to Section 4!

The FY2009 budget request that the Bush Administration recently submitted to Congress eliminated the funding to the HUD Section 4 Capacity Building and Affordable Housing program. As your constituent, I am urging you to restore these funds.

This program is a catalyst for neighborhood success, giving rural and urban communities nationwide the tools to become more desirable and productive places to call home. Since 1993, Section 4 has helped communities develop larger and more complex housing developments under ever-challenging market conditions.

The 15-year-old Section 4 program requires grantees to meet a 3:1 private-public match that is unique to the HUD program. In 2007, community organizations clearly surpassed this match, with $29.7 million generating $1.9 billion in additional investment leveraged. With this outstanding return on investment, Section 4 provides vital venture capital for the community development network to extend its reach and expand operations.

As a result, a growing number of communities nationwide are equipped with the infrastructure and resources to thrive, while offering their residents the services and opportunities necessary to succeed. These healthy, vibrant and sustainable neighborhoods are springboards to success, giving impoverished families the opportunities to succeed. Please restore these critical funds in the FY2009 budget.
