At Habitat for Humanity, volunteers are the engine driving our ability to build homes with low-income families in need of housing.

As a Habitat for Humanity supporter, I am writing to urge you to support the Serve America Act (S. 277). This important legislation gives more Americans the chance to address our nation's greatest challenges, including affordable housing, energy independence, health care for low-income workers, strengthening public schools, and disaster response and preparedness.

Specifically, the Serve America Act would:

- Create new, effective "Corps" focused on areas of national need.  It will ask 175,000 Americans to give a year of service through these corps as part of a new national commitment to solve these challenges;
- Help young Americans get on a path to a lifetime of service and improve opportunities for young people in low-income, high-need communities;
-  Give retiring citizens who are ready, willing, and able the chance to be involved in service, especially if they have skills the public needs;
- Increase short-term volunteer opportunities for Americans of all ages who can't commit to longer-term service programs;
- Support innovative ways to serve at nonprofit organizations like Habitat for Humanity;
-  Establish a Commission to study and improve how the federal government, nonprofits, and the private sector work together to meet national challenges effectively; 
-  Support short-term international service opportunities and expand the Peace Corps so more Americans can provide critical assistance to people across the globe while promoting America's international standing.  

The United States needs all of its citizens to be ready to serve as we face unprecedented challenges. By encouraging service and removing barriers for Americans willing to volunteer, we can tackle our greatest challenges as a nation together.
