As a Habitat for Humanity supporter, I am writing to draw your attention to World Habitat Day, and to urge to you to make low-income housing a priority in your legislative agenda.

With more than 1.6 billion people living in inadequate housing worldwide and millions more lacking adequate sanitation, electricity, and security, our nation and our world have never needed decent, affordable housing so urgently.

You can make an important difference by taking action on key decisions before Congress. At home, programs like the Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP) and Section 4 Capacity Building provide vital funds to help families who are hit hardest by the economic crisis find adequate and affordable housing. These programs need full funding.

Abroad, our foreign assistance agenda must return to a focus on shelter. Please support the Shelter, Land, and Urban Management (SLUM) Assistance Act (HR 1702) as a critical first step to accomplishing these goals.
