Every day, Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the country rely on the important work of national service members. These service members are able to support Habitat’s work thanks to programs like AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA. For the past 23 years, service members have helped manage, organize and lead thousands of Habitat volunteers, and support Habitat affiliates’ daily operations year-round.

As your constituent, a supporter of Habitat for Humanity and on behalf of the communities nationwide that will benefit from the work of national service participants, I am writing to ask that you protect funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and all national service programs, especially AmeriCorps.

Please support CNCS at $1.2 billion in the FY 20 Labor-HHS appropriations bill. This includes AmeriCorps State and National at $386 million and AmeriCorps VISTA at $97 million.

The national service programs that CNCS oversees, such as AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA, help Habitat affiliates to serve thousands of families every year that would not likely otherwise be reached. The national service model has enabled Habitat to meet the needs of our communities through homeownership opportunities in a cost-effective way in partnership with the federal government.

Since Habitat for Humanity first partnered with CNCS in 1994, more than 10,600 AmeriCorps members have served with Habitat affiliates nationwide, serving more than 26,000 U.S. families, contributing more than 17 million hours of service, raising tens of millions of dollars in cash and in-kind resources, and mobilizing more than 3.9 million volunteers.

I understand that you are working within budget constraints, but programs like AmeriCorps that are cost-effective with high-yield investment and a proven track record of success should be supported. Therefore I urge you to support CNCS at $1.2 billion in the fiscal year 20 Labor-HHS appropriations bill.

The national service model has enabled organizations around the country, including Habitat for Humanity, to meet the needs of our communities in a cost-effective way in partnership with the federal government.
