Protect Federal Programs that Support Habitat for Humanity

The president’s fiscal year 2020 budget request proposes to eliminate ALL of the key federal programs that support Habitat for Humanity’s work nationwide. Now Congress must decide how much funding these programs will receive, and we need you to make your voice heard to your federal lawmakers about why these programs are of value to taxpayers, our partner families, and the future of affordable housing in communities across the country.

Please send the following letter to your members of Congress urging them to support adequate funding for these programs in the fiscal year 2020 budget. The elimination of these programs would be devastating to the Habitat network and our ability to provide first-time homeownership opportunities to low-income families.

As your constituent, and a supporter of Habitat for Humanity, I am writing to ask that you protect federal programs that support Habitat's ability to create affordable homeownership opportunities for low-income families nationwide.  Decent, affordable housing provides the stability and opportunity that individuals and families need to improve their health and education, enhance their financial growth and security, and strengthen their neighborhoods.

As my federal lawmaker, I urge you to support adequate funding of the following programs that are integral to Habitat's work in the fiscal year 20 budget: $15 million for the Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP), $1.5 billion for the HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME), $1.2 billion for the USDA 502 loan program, and $1.2 billion for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the agency that oversees all national service programs. Eliminating or reducing funding for these programs would exacerbate local housing shortages and increase the burden of housing costs on families in need of housing stability.

These programs are a worthwhile value to the taxpayer because of their proven track record to provide homeownership opportunities to first-time homebuyers, ability to effectively revitalize neighborhoods and provide much needed capacity to nonprofits to meet community needs, and success in leveraging millions of dollars of private investment. These programs exemplify effective public-private partnerships that are able to meet and support the critical housing needs of local communities in cost-effective, responsible, and proven ways.

I urge you to support adequate funding for these programs in the fiscal year 2020 budget.
